NEW LAND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ARE ESSENTIAL In a Climate-Changed

California and the West is facing unprecedented ecological challenges, species losses, and “out of control” fires. Yet, woefully out of date and, in some cases, even harmful forest & property management practices are being suggested and applied. Yet, there are simple ways that you can help moderate some of the most harmful changes. Human influence has warmed the climate at a rate that is unprecedented in at least the last 2000 years. Global temperatures over the past 50 years are the highest they have been in over 2000 years. In addition, prolonged drought, atmospheric conditions and increased UV radiation are also problems driving the loss of trees and wildlife. Read the Full Article Here

Why Spring is the Worst Time To Cut Trees

Did you know that one-third of our tree species are facing extinction? A recent report, issued by over 500 tree experts and 61 institutions, titled “State of the World’s Trees” indicates that if we continue to do business as usual we will lose 30% of the known 60,000 species.

In addition to tree loss and declining tree health, there have been drastic reductions in some wildlife, (especially birds), across a variety of species. In a new study by scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, it has been discovered that 3 billion birds have gone missing in a very short time span. Read the Full Article Here

Why You Shouldn't Trim or Cut Down Trees in Spring.

Waiting until fall or winter helps protect wildlife and the trees themselves.

It’s that time of year. Along with the singing birds and croaking frogs, there’s the sound of chainsaws and stump grinders as some people remove trees from their properties.

Trimming Trees in Spring Harms Flora and Fauna

Catriona Glazebrook, executive director of WellKind, explains that people often like to get outside in the spring when the weather warms. During this time, they often feel like working in the yard and gardening, such as trimming trees.

She added that while gardening is perfect for this time of year, it is not a good time to be outside cutting, trimming, or using heavy and noisy equipment.

Glazebrook pointed out that while the warm weather and the urge to spring clean may make it seem like a good time to take care of trees, there are many reasons why you might want to wait. Read the Full Article Here
