How are your garden classes going? ARE THEY IN-PERSON, VIRTUAL OR HYBRID CLASSES?

We spoke with Laura Honda, a 4th grade teacher with a passion for outdoor education. Laura has a Hybrid class where students can experience both outdoor education and virtual learning.

…my students are extremely excited to fight climate change and have a positive impact on the environment.
— Laura Honda

Some of her students’ favorite things to do is take a nature walk. This exercise is now done in the students’ backyard identifying plants and trees. As Junior Botanist, students are thrilled to yell out their plant discoveries to the rest of the class.

Along the many vegetable plants in the school garden, students are working on a partnership project with a goal to plant 10,000 Redwood tree seeds. Laura states, “…my students are extremely excited to fight climate change and have a positive impact on the environment.”

Laura’s students in her three cohorts will also take cosmos seeds and spread them around the school to bring a cheer to everyone when they bloom — “A pocket of Habitat.”

WellKind is proud to have Laura Honda as a speaker for our Webinar series “Seeds of Change” on Thursday, february 18th!

If you’re looking to learn the benefits of outdoor education for children, and how to inspire children to appreciate growing their own food, THIS IS THE WORKSHOP SERIES FOR YOU! Register & learn more here.

ABOUT WELLKIND

OUR MISSION

We give local leaders the resources to cultivate economic and ecological wellness for their communities and the earth. Wellkind provides leadership training and ecological and economic resources from a perspective that recognizes local leadership, systems thinking, and our inherent connection to nature.

OUR GARDEN PROGRAM

Wellkind develops and implements school gardens to be utilized as learning labs to educate our youth about science, health, ecology, nutrition, and more. We recently expanded our program to support family and community gardens as bridges connecting people to the Earth, increasing awareness of health, and providing access to organic food production.
